A decent rum, but unfortunately with unremarkable aromas. It remains good for a pleasant tasting, but did not convince me.
This VSOP rum from the Bologne distillery in Guadeloupe, that I tasted at the beach bar (Langley Resort, Fort Royale), is really something extra for a VSOP. The blend consists of different rums distilled in their copper column still, aged in French oak barrels from 4 to over 8 years. The nose is fruity, woody, smoky, nutty and vegetal with scents of cocoa, honey, cane juice, olives, bananas, pineapple, walnuts, herbs and raisins. At the palate it’s complex, sweet, spicy, dry, woody and nutty with flavors of pepper, vanilla, nutmeg, ginger, tobacco and hazelnut. The finish is rather long and definitely savory.

A VSOP that has a lot going for it as a permanent range rum. The nose is relatively complete, with exotic fruits, citrus and dried fruits, but also tobacco, floral notes, sugarcane, caramel, sweet spices and a lightly toasted woodiness. A broad and interesting profile. On the palate, the combination of fruit and spice dominates, with notes of baked apple, nutmeg, cinnamon and cardamom. Exotic fruit and caramelized oak give the profile roundness, while the agricultural influence reminds us of the profile's dry side. The alcohol is well integrated, but could be a little stronger. The finish is the antithesis of the palate, with an assertive bitterness on greenness, and more spicy, dry, herbaceous and tobacco notes. This flashier side contrasts with the rest of the profile, which was intended to be more refined and gentle. A good rum with a well-chiselled profile, available at a decent price.
