Nobilis Romero & Sons Ecuador No. 19 2005 17yr 69%
The Ecuador No. 19 rum, crafted in the Romero & Sons distillery, offers a robust and complex profile. Distilled from molasses in a column still and aged for 17 years, this Ecuadorian rum is finished at a bold 69% ABV, showcasing notes of caramel, dark chocolate, and hazelnut. While praised for its powerful and nutty profile, the high alcohol content can occasionally dominate, resulting in metallic and sharp notes. Users appreciate its balance of sweetness and depth, with subtle hints of tropical fruits, roasted wood, and a tobacco undertone. This limited-edition release, only 244 bottles available, is highlighted for its unique high-strength character; however, opinions vary regarding its complexity and alcohol integration.

“A Spaniard with Wumms! Although he can not hide his Spanish roots, this rum fascinates me a bit. Although now no taste mega-highlight, he brings intense flavor. Surely its 69% contribute their part, but these are quite suitable and tameable after some time in the glass. Especially on the palate, dark flavors of nut and chocolate and, interestingly, a hint of lime show up. In conjunction with the Spanish basic character an exciting mixture. I would rather not buy a bottle, but once again something different in glass, I like!”

“On the nose you immediately recognize the Spanish style: metallic, fresh, fruity, almost floral. On fruit apricot with green apple and lime zest. In addition, a slight note of caramel. Reminds me a bit of white wine. With time it gets a slightly smoky undertone of vanilla pipe tobacco. Out the back also still slightly vinegar. The high alcohol bites a bit at first.Palate: initially astringent and slightly bitter to peppery, which may also be due to the 69%, then goes into the metallic fruity. Again there is apricot with lime zest. It also seems woody with a tart nuttiness similar to hazelnut and becomes increasingly chocolaty. Out the back it has light tobacco. Remains metallic and becomes a bit more herbal. The high ABV makes it a bit more interesting.”

“This rum is like a chameleon: Fresh in the glass, it shows floral and fruity, with notes of pome fruit and citrus. With time, smoke aromas come to the fore. On the finish, one tastes light tobacco notes. The Spanish style is nevertheless recognizable the entire time, but due to the high alcohol content you have very strong flavors (and accompanying spiciness). A very interesting rum, which in my opinion is somewhat underestimated.”
